Witches and sorcerers were dancing under last night's full moon with news their Craft will soon be legal in Victoria, Australia.
Magicians, fortune tellers and palm readers are also in the clear. Fines of $500 will no longer curse Victoria's 2091 registered witches, with the Vagrancy Act to be repealed.
Attorney-General Rob Hulls said the Act's repeal was about modernising the law. "The Vagrancy Act really belongs to a bygone era where people were treated as vagrants and vagabonds and were actually sent out to the colony of Victoria for their sins," he said.
The Pagan Awareness Network welcomed the repeal of the Act, the last law in Australia to ban witchcraft. "There'll be several thousand pagans in Melbourne celebrating this news under the full moon," Victorian co-ordinator Gavin Andrew said.
Some offences in the Vagrancy Act will be retained or updated under the other statutes. They include escape from lawful custody and wilful and obscene exposure.
